Five public schools in Narrows, VA cancelled classes yesterday after an online article linked the name of their town to a conspiracy surrounding the Sandy Hook shooting and The Dark Knight Rises -- which, of course, was tied to another tragedy in Aurora, CO at the time of the film's debut.
In the initial write-up on RevelationNow.net -- now taken down and inaccessible -- an article titled "The Next School Massacre Target?" prompted officials in Giles County, Virginia to warn parents and cancel classes on Wednesday. No specific threat had been made, but as Giles County Sheriff Morgan Milliron put it, "We have to take this as serious information."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rumor originated from a scene in TDKR which depicts Commissioner Gordon referencing a map of attack sites: one is called Sandy Hook and the other is Narrows. Recently, several conspiracy sites such as InfoWars.com have picked up the story, which has resulted in widespread speculation.
Starting today, students will return to class in Narrows, although security has since been increased.
