Da Vinci's Demons: How Leonardo Da Vinci is Like Batman David Goyer discusses his new Starz series.
David Goyer is known for his scripts for comic book adaptations like The Dark Knight and Blade trilogies (and coming up, Man of Steel), and speaking about his new TV series, Da Vinci’s Demons, at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, he noted, “I’d never done anything historical and period.” That being said, Goyer said that he felt Da Vinci is “kind of super hero-y anyway!”
Besides being a great artist, Goyer noted Da Vinci was “also an inventor and war engineer. He was a writer and swordsman and there are stories about being able to bend iron bars with his bare hands.”
The show focuses on a young Da Vinci, played by Tom Riley and Goyer noted there were actually a few correlations between Batman and Da Vinci, including Bob Kane basing Batman’s cape design on Da Vinci’s flying machine design, and both men (even if only one was real) having issues with missing parents and important moments in caves – Goyer noted that Da Vinci wrote about “Something horrific that happened to him in a cave,” which will be explored on the series.
Goyer said Da Vinci’s Demons was 80-85% based on fact, but “embellished with what we’re calling historical fantasy.” As he explained, “One of the theme’s of the show is history is a lie, constantly being overwritten by the winners,” describing Da Vinci’s Demons as “the secret history of the man who invented the future. “
Besides making some real historical figures a bit older or younger than they would have been at the time, he also explained that there were some real life people where, “We don’t know for a fact that Da Vinci met [them], but we’ve taken the leap.” One of these people will be Vlad Dracul. So yes, Da Vinci vs. Dracula may happen on this series! As Goyer noted, the series is, “Primarily meant to be a fun piece more than anything.”
As viewers of Starz have come to expect with series like Spartacus and Boss, Da Vinci’s Demons doesn’t hold back when it comes to sex scenes. But while the early episodes have Da Vinci involved with women, it doesn’t seem the show will ignore speculation that he was gay. While Riley didn’t get specific, he simply said, “He’s a man who wasn’t going to be constrained by the society he was within.”
Goyer said that approaching the series, “I didn’t want to do 'ye olde historical drama.' It's something historical, but viewed through a modern prism.” And while he is adding embellishments, he also noted, “Some really crazy things happened in the year our show takes place and we’ll explore those in the first season.”
When Da Vinci died, 13,000 pages were found that he left behind, containing his ideas for inventions like a machine gun and the submarine, but Goyer said that within a year, 7,000 of those pages had gone missing. “We’ll introduce those pages in the show,” he revealed, saying the challenge the show’s production designers faced was coming up with Da Vinci-style ideas and art that could appear to match the real thing.
Da Vinci’s Demons premieres Friday, April 12th on Starz.

South Parks' Ryan Quincy Talks About His New Animated Series Out There Growing up weird.
IFC is set to premiere its new animated coming-of-age comedy series Out There this February.
The show’s creator Ryan Quincy, who is a two-time Emmy-winning animation director and producer of South Park, will voice the main character, Chad Stevens.
Out There chronicles the coming-of-age misadventures of socially awkward Chad (Quincy), his little brother Jay (Kate Micucci) and his best friend, Chris (Justin Roiland). Living in the small town of Holford, the boys wander its surreal, bleak landscape waiting out their last few years of adolescence. Along the way, viewers meet Chad’s conservative parents, Wayne (John DiMaggio) and Rose (Megan Mullally), as well as Chris’s single mother, Joanie (Pamela Adlon) and her disastrous boyfriend, Terry (Fred Armisen). They also meet the object of Chad’s affection, Sharla (Linda Cardellini).
Quincy, Roiland, Dimaggio, Micucci and Cardellini were all on hand to talk about the show at this weeks TCA (Television Critics Association).
Quincy said that the longer time frame he is afforded to produce individual episodes on the show has been a positive change, but that as his hands are in "all of the pies," it's still a brutal schedule. (South Park famously produces one episode in six days.)
With Out There, he wanted to have the ability to "fine tune and not have a limited style of animation, so that characters would be able to walk with two legs and don’t just bounce around."
Out There has a distinct tone, as well. Quincy wanted to create a show that moved at a slower pace than some of the other animated series on tap these days.
"The first episode is called the Great Escape," he said. "And it is an escape from rapid zingers and move into more of a slow burn that I think that people can relate to more, and will resonate more."
Quincy calls the show a cathartic therapy session for him to reconcile the trials of childhood.
"It has a Wonder Years and Christmas Story feel to it," Roiland says.
Linda Cardellini, who has already played out adolescent angst on television in the (deservedly) critically beloved Freaks and Geeks said:
"It reminded me of what Lindsay Weir (her character on Freaks and Geeks) said in the first episode of that series, 'I hate High School.' If you're a popular person or unpopular you have a hard time getting to know yourself as a teenager, but Sharla a little more optimistic and more adjusted that Lindsey was."
"Out There is a kindred spirit with Freaks and Geeks and coming of age shows, so having her presence is a nice connective tissue to this show," Quincy added.
There is a distinctive aesthetic to the characters on Out There which separates it out from the pack, as well. Quincy says the look of the animation is a choice he made in order to convey the idea that the characters look on the outside as they feel on the inside.
"If they looked like humans they wouldn't have the same umph. I was influenced by Dr, Seuss and so on, and am more interested in characters with claws and cat faces and so on." Adding, "But these are very human stories."
Out There will premiere in February on IFC, head over to the network site to take a look at the trailer for the series.

Bates Motel: Why the Psycho-Based Series is Set in the Present Day How the Psycho prequel is forging its own path.
Creating a prequel story to Psycho is a bold move, given how beloved the film is, but A&E’s upcoming Bates Motel is notably taking the story of a teenage Norman Bates and moving it to the present day. Speaking about Bates Motel at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, executive producer Carlton Cuse (Lost) said that it was an easy call for him to move the series to the present, rather than the 1950s (to line up with the 1960 film), explaining, “The idea of doing a contemporary prequel made it clear that what we were doing was something that was inspired by Psycho but not an homage to Psycho, and that was a big difference to us.”
He later added that doing Bates Motel as a period piece “was not interesting to me. Again, I think the idea of an homage is just not… that's just not engaging to me. So it felt like making that fundamental decision to make the story contemporary gave us the freedom to really take these characters wherever we wanted to.” Cuse noted that by the end of the series, ”In some general form, we are going to catch up with a version of the character from the movie,” but not having it set in the past made it so they weren’t bound absolutely to the continuity of the film and to have everything exactly line up.
Cuse elaborated, “it just seemed really interesting to us, this sort of fundamental idea of how does Norman Bates become the guy who's in that movie? And that was just really a fascinating idea for us. And in a certain way, we thought, well, this is a tragedy. It’s a fantastic dramatic form but not one that you get to do a lot in television. And we sort of want the audience to fall in love with these characters, particularly Norma (Up in the Air’s Vera Farmiga) and Norman (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s Freddie Highmore), and yet we know their inevitable fates. And that tension of knowing what their fate is and seeing how they get there was something that we, as storytellers, just thought was really compelling.”
Cuse said that they were approaching Bates Motel with a fairly clean slate – not only in terms of not being set in the same era as the original, but ignoring anything revealed about the Bates family in Psycho II-IV. Explained Cuse, “the mythology that you think is what dictates the relationship between Norma and Norman is probably not what it's going to turn out to be. A little scene at the very beginning of the pilot, we'll see the rest of that scene in an episode downstream and it may surprise you what you actually learn about what the relationship is like between these two characters and what drives Norman Bates to be the guy that he becomes. And for us it was really a process of invention, not of trying to kind of stick to what had been done.”
The core of Bates Motel is the relationship between Norman and Norma, which executive producer Kerry Erhrin noted is “obviously oedipal.” Farmiga though said that approaching Norma Bates, “I got into wanting to defend who that woman was. I was sent the first three episodes, and she was just such a beautiful portrait of valiant maternity to me. And so therein I saw the challenge. She’s just a real head turner, you know? To me the story is just a beautiful love letter between a mother and her son, and that’s how I perceive the character. That's how how I approach it.”
Remarked Farmiga, “There's an Edvard Munch painting of the Madonna. It's really warped and it kind of exudes the sacred and the profane and it's just psychologically gripping, and that's what I was so drawn to with Norma. She's a playground for an actress. It's, like, when they offer you Hedda Gabler, you don't say no. And that's what it was for me. The character's riddled with contradiction. She’s as strong and tall as an oak and as fragile as a butterfly and everything in between that I admire in female characters that I come across, which is resilience and passion and intellect and, at the same time, she's an absolute train wreck and a magnet.” Farmiga later noted, “She's a cool blonde that, at the onset, appears very lovely, but as soon as she encounters danger, she acts in a really kind of animalistic way.”
As for playing the iconic Norman Bates, Highmore said, “We all know where he's going to end up. It doesn't give anything away to say that he'll go on to be psycho. But is that necessarily because of his upbringing? It's that sort of argument between nature versus nurture. Is he who he is and will he always become the person that he will become, or is it because they move to this dodgy town and there's a sort of weird relationship -- or certainly close, intimate relationship -- between Norma and Norman. And that challenges the audience to think, well, if I was in that situation, if I had had the upbringing that Norman had had, would I be slightly different?" Highmore grinned, unable to resist adding, "You know, we all go a little mad sometimes.”
Asked if he felt any pressure taking on the role and living up to Anthony Perkins’ performance, Highmore said, “I'm very lucky playing Norman Bates. I feel if there is any pressure to do as well as you can with a character, it comes more from the character himself than by previous people. Of course, Anthony Perkins has done an iconic take. But the character of Norman Bates is also iconic. And so I guess I just want to do him justice and make sure that we get the best Norman that we can.”
A reporter referenced the polarizing (and metaphysical) ending to Lost, and Cuse joked that the ending of Bates Motel was, “going to be cryptic,” before adding, “I think there's a story here that has a beginning, middle, and end. I can't tell you exactly how long our story's going to last just yet. I think that's part of the discovery process of us developing the show, but I think eventually there is end point to this narrative, absolutely.”
Cuse described Bates Motel as, “very serialized. The show’s like, I think, all the best serialized shows, whether it’s Breaking Bad or Homeland, it's a kind of a story that takes ten episodes to unfold. And obviously, there's some hooks that will hopefully carry us into a second season. But there are a number of different dramatic things that happen. We're not just solving one particular crime. There's a number of mysteries.”
Bates Motel premieres March 18th on A&E.

Christopher Guest and Chris O’Dowd are Barking Up a Family Tree on HBO It's funny cause its true.
Christopher Guest will unveil the documentary-style comedy series Family Tree on HBO sometime this spring. Shot in the style of his improvisational films Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind (and the classic This is Spinal Tap, which Guest of course was a part of), the comedy was written and created by Guest and Jim Piddock.
Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) stars as Tom Chadwick, a man who has recently lost his job and his girlfriend and has a rather unsure sense of his own identity. But when he inherits a mysterious box of belongings from a great aunt he never met, Tom starts investigating his lineage and uncovers a whole world of unusual stories and characters, acquiring a growing sense of who he and his real family are.
Guest, Piccock and O’Dowd were on hand at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today to talk a bit about the series.
“If it had been a movie I think I could have gotten it made,” Guest said when asked why he had decided to craft this story as a series, “but it doesn’t lend itself to that format.”
Guest was inspired to create the series when his father passed away and he was given boxes of his belongings to go through. "I knew the content of some of these boxes,” he said. “But many things I didn’t know so there was a discovery.”
He found diaries and writings from hundreds of years ago that provided a different vision of his family. He then brought Piccock (who had worked with Guest as an actor previously) on board to help him craft the story which seeks to balance the comedy with the more emotional elements of the tale.
Though the show is improvised, both Piccock and Guest call it a deceptively complex process. A journalist in England had said to Piccock that writing an improvised script must be the easiest job in the world.
“In fact took longer than anything that I’d worked on in 25 years as a writer,” he corrected.
“It’s quite seamless, but took much longer than conventional screenplay,” Guest added. “We knew basis of story, and then had to go into the intricacies of each other’s life. In this case he (O'Dowd) knows what his early life was so whatever he’s going to improvise it has to be built around those things - which are sacrosanct. It’s a deceptively detailed process.”
In hiring their lead they looked for: "A funny person that could handle things that were more emotional and reality based portions of the tale.”
Enter O’Dowd who says the improvisational style is, “intimidating because everybody else is so good and intimidating because you start every day anew. There is a story but everything is improvisation with new characters and you don’t know why they will respond. It’s very freeing and yet there pressure in the moment because you have to work it out right then and there, and Christopher despite his appearance, is a very funny person. It makes for a lively set.”
“I’ve been given an opportunity by the BBC and HBO to do the kind of work that I do, which is rather unusual,” Guest said.
Four episodes were shot in London, at which point the show traveled to complete production in the U.S..
Given what we saw in the series tease, we look forward to seeing how the Family Tree will untimely play out.
Tom Bennett and Nina Conti co-star in the series which also features appearances by frequent Guest collaborators Bob Balaban, Ed Begley, Jr., Michael McKean, and Fred Willard (plus Guest and Piddock themselves), along with Carrie Aizley, Maria Blasucci, Matt Griesser, Don Lake, Lisa Palfrey, Jim Piddock, Kevin Pollak, Amy Seimetz, Meera Syal, and Ashley Walters.

Grand Theft Auto V Box Art Reveal Coming This Month New art gallery added to official site.
Rockstar promises that Grand Theft Auto V’s official box art is coming soon. In a post on its Rockstar Newswire, Rockstar promises that there’s “lots more ahead” for Grand Theft Auto V, including “more artwork and the unveiling of the game's official cover later this month.”
Rockstar has also compiled all of the Grand Theft Auto V artwork released to date in one convenient place on its downloads page as well as all screenshots and trailers in its gallery.

CES 2013: What to Expect from the Biggest Week in Tech Our preview of the tech industry's E3.
On Monday, January 7th, IGN will be shipping out to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas for a week of on-location coverage of new, never before seen hardware and gadgets from the world's biggest brands, including Sony, Samsung, LG, HTC, and countless others. For the uninitiated, CES is the biggest technology eventof the year, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors with the rare opportunity to check out hundreds of new smartphones, tablets, gaming devices, HDTVs, and more before anyone else.
So, what can you expect this year from the tech industry equivalent of E3?
On Monday, all of the key players will be holding press conferences throughout the day, including Samsung, LG, Sony, and countless others. IGN will be on-hand bringing you a live blog of Sony's press conference at 5pm pacific time, and delivering the biggest updates from other events throughout the day. To follow along, please bookmark and revisit our live blog.
CES may be synonymous with big-screen HDTVs and tablets, but it has a rich history of major gaming product launches, including the North American debut of the Nintendo Entertainment System, original Xbox, Razer's Switchblade and Project Fiona prototypes. This year, we expect to see a vast array of exciting new gaming hardware and software. While we're unlikely to hear more about the next generation of consoles, Sony will have a huge presence at the show, showing off their latest and greatest for the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PlayStation Mobile.
Gaming hardware maker Razer has teased big announcements for the show — could we see the rebirth of their Project Fiona gaming tablet concept? Or, perhaps, a new incarnation of its Switchblade gaming handheld prototype? We'll have to wait and see.
But then there are the hidden gems, like this $6,000 gaming station:
While Apple and Google generally save their announcements for later in the year, CES has become the launching point for many of the year's biggest smartphones and tablets. With the battle for market share heating up, we will see an array of Windows Phone and Android devices packing the newest, most powerful mobile processors, high resolution displays, and ultra-thin designs. Despite the increased emphasis on small screens, CES is still very much a show about massive, expensive HDTVs packing the latest display technologies. This year is going to be all about 4K — or Ultra HD as it has now come to be known — which boasts four times as many pixels as the current high-definition standard, 1080p. LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and Sony are all expected to show off their 3840 × 2160 displays. While films and television shot in native 4K or Ultra HS are currently few and far between, you can bet that it's going to be an increasingly common occurrence in 2013.
We'll also witness the resurgence of commercially available OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays. Sony introduced the first and only OLED HDTV to reach North American retailers, the 11-inch XEL-1, in 2008 with an MSRP of $2,499. Now, five years later, OLED TVs are making a comeback with large models from Samsung, LG, and others. But with LG's first retail model already retailing for over $10,000 in Korea — will anyone be able to afford one?
CES will also give us a glimpse of the future, like prototypes of bendable smartphone displays from Samsung and others. Are real-life Pip-Boys be just around the corner?
With the release of Windows 8 last year, 2013 is certain to be chock full of thinner, faster ultrabooks, Windows 8 tablets, and laptop-tablet convertibles. Last year we saw the introduction of Vizio's new computer category, including iMac- and MacBook-like Windows PCs, as well as awesome transforming products like Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga. This year will likely yield improved performance, better displays, and even more compact form factors.

Mutant Mudds 2 Confirmed Prepare to get retro and muddy all over again in 2013.
If you love retro-inspired platforming (you know you do), then you're in luck. Renegade Kid has officially confirmed via Twitter that Mutant Mudds 2 is in the works. If it's anything like the first game,which debuted as a download title for the 3DS eshop early last year, you can probably expect to be floating around and shooting muddy enemies with your bubble blaster and water pack. Just a hunch.
A release date for Mutant Mudds 2 has yet to be announced. All we know for sure is that it will be coming to Nintendo's eShop - though whether it will come to 3DS, Wii U or both remains to be seen.

Oscars Will Spotlight James Bond The Academy to celebrate 007's 50th anniversary at next month's telecast.
The 85th Academy Awards will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the James Bond movie franchise with a special tribute during the ceremony next month.
“We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “Starting with Dr. No back in 1962, the 007 movies have become the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon.”
The Oscar nominations will be announced next Thursday, January 10, at 5:30 a.m., PT. The winners will be revealed during the ceremony -- which of course will air live on ABC -- on Sunday, February 24.

Looper, Flight, Zero Dark Thirty Get Writers Guild Nominations Scribes name the best in their craft for 2012.
We got the PGA nominations on Wednesday, and now today the Writers Guild of America has revealed their picks for the best of 2012. Flight, Looper, The Master, Moonrise Kingdom and Zero Dark Thirty have all received nods, and as with the Producers Guild, the winners of the WGA awards are usually a pretty good indication of where the Oscars will go in their particular categories (go Looper!).

Help X-Factor Writer Peter David Time to give back!
Over the holiday break, acclaimed writer of such comics as X-Factor, The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Tower adaptations, Spectacular Spider-Man and so, so many more, suffered a stroke that has seriously impaired the use of the right side of his body. According to his wife Kathleen's updates through David's blog, he is on the road to recovery and the family is thankful for everyone's well wishes. Of course, a new found medical ailment comes with new found expenses.
In her latest update, Kathleen has given us all a way that will help their family through the ordeal, and it's as simple as buying a book. She writes:
Even though we have health insurance we have co-pays and the like. And since this stroke fell at the end of the year, we have all the new co-pays to deal with (I can honestly see those of you who have had to deal with this nodding your heads). And there are things that the insurance company just won’t cover (more head nodding). So we are at the beginning of what is going to be a very expensive year even though we are only 4 days in.

He also revised an X-Factor script for his editor at Marvel, which I think made him feel good/more normal than he has been feeling."

Cougar Town Creator on the Show's Move to TBS Bill Lawrence on the show's new network and why they're not changing the title.
The continually funny Cougar Town is making the move from ABC to TBS for Season 4, debuting next Tuesday - one of those rare times a low-rated, critically acclaimed series with a cult following has been saved by such a move. Speaking to the press today at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, the show’s creator, Bill Lawrence, couldn't resist joking, “I don't know if you've seen, but there's commercials for the show now! It's insane!”
Asked about the transition, Lawrence replied, “Would you believe me if I said this was always my plan?,” before noting that in the current TV world, “The goal is just to stay on the air.”
He noted that Turner president Michael Wright, “was actually a fan of the show,” and told Lawrence, “All I want is you guys to do is to deliver the same show.”
The show’s title has been the center of a lot of discussion, with Lawrence in the past openly considering changing it – especially as it became clear it really had no connection to the story being told, as Jules (Courteney Cox) settled into a long term relationship with someone her own age.
With the show switching networks, Wright said they considered a title change, “For about five seconds,” adding, “We’re behind Cougar Town! “
Said Lawrence, “It’s become part of the humor. Why change something we all appreciate as part of the show’s humor? We wear it as a badge of honor.” There’s a joke included on the title card each week, and Lawrence noted, “I still enjoy mocking it and doing the title cards,” saying it had become akin to The Simpsons blackboard.
Lawrence then remarked, “Being filled with self-loathing is a characteristic of 90% of comedy writers anyway. I’ve embraced it. It’s an amazing title. I’d do it again!”
While Lawrence is still a part of the show, Rick Swartzlander has taken over has showrunner. He said that when it came to messaging from above, “TBS wanted the same show we had and they were basically saying, ‘Don’t screw it up.’”

Want to Know the Biggest Selling Game in the UK Last Year? No points if you guessed it.
You probably could have guessed it but Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the best selling video game in the UK last year, according to the latest information from GfK Chart-Track.
It narrowly beat out FIFA 13 for the number one spot. But don't feel bad for the sporting Goliath; there's even two other FIFA titles – FIFA 12 and FIFA Street – in the top 20. Interestingly, it's also worth noting that the top five games were released in the last two months of the year.

BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition Announced Back into the depths.
What better way to get ready for BioShock: Infinite than by catching up on the previous BioShock titles. 2K is probably thinking along similar lines because today it officially announced that it's releasing BioShock, BioShock 2, all the DLC and some never-before-seen concept art in the form of BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition.
We already kind of knew this was in the works when a listing appeared on the British Board of Film Classification's website. It's going to be released in North America on January 14, 2013, and will retail at $29.99. It will be released in some international territories at a later date.
Here's a breakdown of exactly what you get:
- Museum of Orphaned Concepts: Take a tour of a never-before-seen BioShock museum and view early concept art, character models and more set within the halls of Rapture.
- Plasmids Pack: Includes four additional Plasmids and Gene Tonics – Sonic Boom, EVE Saver, Vending Expert and Machine Buster – for use in BioShock.
- Challenge Rooms Pack: Previously exclusive to PS3™ and now available for Xbox 360 for the first time, the pack tests the player’s mettle by requiring them to utilize the skills learned while traversing the halls of Rapture to survive three separate puzzle rooms inBioShock.

Breaking Bad: Premiere Date Revealed for the Final Episodes "Premiere date, bitch!"
When we posted our Midseason TV Preview earlier this week, there were several comments asking the same, semi-panicked question – “Where’s Breaking Bad!?” Breaking Bad wasn’t included because that preview was only for series debuting up until May, and we already knew Breaking Bad -- like last year -- would not be airing until mid-summer. The only question was when…
Thanks to one of the show’s stars, Aaron Paul, we now know the answer. The reveal came via a Tweet, as Paul wrote “New episodes of Breaking Bad will air July 14th. Get ready to break some s**t.”
Breaking Bad Creator Talks Finale
These are the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad, so assuming there are no weeks off, it’s a fair guess that the series finale will air September 1st – but we’ll let you know when that becomes official.
