In an interview with Kotaku, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart revealed that his studio and Atari almost started development on Baldur's Gate 3 back in late 2008 and early 2009.
According to Urquhart, a contract to begin work on the role-playing sequel was ready to be signed, but Atari backed away at the last minute.
"All this work got done. We negotiated a whole contract. Years worth of work, and it turned out they didn't have the money," said Urquhart.
Baldur's Gate is a Dungeons and Dragons-based role-playing franchise that was originally developed by BioWare. The first title was released for PC back in 1998 and the sequel, Shadows of Amn, was released in 2000. An 'Enhanced Edition' of the first Baldur's Gate was recently released by Beamdog. Beamdog has publicly stated that eventually making Baldur's Gate 3 is one of their goals.
Obsidian is currently working on South Park: The Stick of Truth as well as Project Eternity, a crowd-funded role-playing game inspired by Infinite Engine RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale.
