Star Wars Tied to Mayan Apocalypse Report links Jedi Knight Academy and Yavin 4 to Episode VII.

According to Mayan lore (or at least to those who have chosen to interpret it this way), the world as we know it will come to an end this Friday, December 21, 2012. This date marks the end of the Maya Long Count calendar. And just to make the whole thing that much more interesting to the Internet, there's a Star Wars connection to it.

With the apocalypse supposedly at hand, there has been renewed interest in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala, which was the location used as the rebel base on Yavin 4 in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. The area has been a popular pilgrimage site for both Star Wars fans and Mayan enthusiasts.

"Surrounded by thick jungle home to jaguars, monkeys and toucans, the view of Yavin 4 from the top of Tikal's Temple Four, known as the temple of the double-headed serpent, has changed little since Lucas filmed here in 1977," says Reuters.

Now here's where Reuters' report gets kind of crazy geek-friendly if their sources are accurate: "Yavin 4 and the rebel base return to the Star Wars plot in the forthcoming Episode VII, announced in October by the Walt Disney Co, in which Skywalker comes back to the planet to build a Jedi Knight academy. However, fans said that Disney will likely film those scenes in a studio rather than return to Tikal."

So could Episode VII be a big screen version of Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy video game? Or based on Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Academy books? Or perhaps Reuters simply took some fan speculation they read somewhere as fact. We know for sure when Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters in 2015. That is if the world survives past this Friday.
