The Old Republic Unveils First Digital Expansion Available for pre-order at $9.99 if you're a subscriber, or $19.99 otherwise.

BioWare has announced that the first digital expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic will release in Spring 2013.

The Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion pack will introduce the aggressive Hutt Cartel and troubled planet Makeb to the game, as well as raise the level cap to 55 and add new story-driven missions to expand your characters' adventures.

The focus of the expansion will be the Hutt Cartel emerging from the shadows to challenge the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire for dominance of the galaxy, bringing with them a host of new creatures, battle stations, droids and general weapons of destruction.

Not much else is known about the expansion just yet, though it's available to pre-order for $9.99 if you're a subscriber and $19.99 if you're currently taking advantage of the game's new free-to-play option. No boxed copies of the expansion will be produced, and anyone who pre-orders by January 7 will get five days of early access to the expansion when it eventually launches. Pre-ordering will also net you preferred status, if you haven't managed to pick that up already.

Following a difficult launch last year, the decision was made to take The Old Republic free-to-play last month, though a subscription option is still available for those players who want unlimited access to the game's content.
