God Mode Announced for XBLA, PSN, and PC Can you "shoot to kill" if your enemies are already dead?

Saber Interactive (makers of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Inversion, and TimeShift, among others) and subsidiary Old School Games have announced God Mode, a tongue-in-cheek fast-action third-person shooter due out in early 2013 for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PSN.

Playing as the descendant of an ancient-God-turned-mere-mortal by Hades, you and up to three co-op mode friends (online or offline) must blast your way through the Maze of Hades and its denizens in order to avoid eternal damnation. All the while, you'll be egged on by a goofy narrator, similar to a wackier version of the "Double Kill" announcer from Halo.

Looks like we're about to make a skele-TON OF A MESS.

"It doesn't take itself too seriously," Saber Interactive and Old School Games head Matthew Karch told IGN. "It is lighthearted fun and focuses on arcade style action over a deep story. I think this makes sense for downloadable games, where players are looking for some quick, thoughtless action."

Character customization, environmental destruction, weapon upgrades and more are the key tenets of the game, which appears to be almost a cross between Serious Sam and Gears of War's Horde mode.

"The first thing we do is tell you how you died," Karch said. "We have come up with some pretty fun ideas for that and they definitely add some lightheartedness to the game."

Clint Eastwood is really looking old these days.

Old School Games, Karch clarified to IGN, is "a studio that Saber started that focuses on high quality, low-cost downloadable titles. The studio uses Saber's technology and development platform to create games that look like retail products, but we have kept it as a separate and isolated studio to allow the team to focus exclusively on these types of games."

Expect battles to adhere to a "the more the merrier" mantra.

Is this Hades or just Honey Boo Boo's house?

Character customization allows for...um, many possibilities.

Ryan McCaffrey heads up IGN Xbox. He used to own a DeLorean, which is weird. Follow him on Twitter at @DMC_Ryan, on IGN, catch him on Podcast Unlocked, and drop-ship him Taylor Ham sandwiches from New Jersey whenever possible.
